Suggested Food List After Having Oral Surgery

A very common question patient’s ask is what type of food they can eat after having oral surgery. Your diet will be critical for a speedy recovery. This is an instructional guide for food items that we recommend, as well as foods to avoid. Remember, it is very important to follow your post-operative instructions for the best outcome of your healing process. FOOD ITEMS THAT WE RECOMMEND:

  1. Clear liquids
  2. Jell-O
  3. Greek yogurt
  4. Mashed potatoes
  5. Scrambled eggs
  6. Apple sauce
  7. Ice cream
  8. Boost or Ensure drinks
  9. Avocado
  10. Smoothies
  11. Broths
  12. Blended soups

FOOD ITEMS TO AVOID:

  1. Spicy foods: Will cause pain and irritation.
  2. Crunchy, crumbly, seeds and grains: Chips, cookies, nuts, and grits will get stuck in the wound and disrupt healing.
  3. Chewy foods: Will increase the risk of biting your cheek, lips, and tongue. Especially soon after the surgery while your mouth is still numb.
  4. Alcohol: Avoid alcohol consumption during the recovery period after your surgery. It will irritate the wound and may interact with any medication(s) that you have been prescribed.
  5. Finally, please stay away from carbonated drinks. This will cause an irritant to the surgical sites.
